Indian symbols misunderstood

Dear Editor:

Regarding the Daily Egyptian's March 19 article about the University of Illinois' Chief Illini mascot, it should be pointed out that American Indians themselves have over many years supported the university's use of the Chief and his dance. This Indian involvement and approval have both been reported in various places and at various times, but is invariably ignored by those who make a good living lecturing about the use of American Indians in campus activities.

Campus activists also ignore the truism that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. As such, the use of Indian names and images by college sports is usually done with the hope that the university's braves (or athletes) can be as strong and courageous as the American Indians were. Or simply because the Indians once occupied the land where the school is sited.
