You‚ve worked hard. You‚ve sweated through mid-terms, and now it has finally arrived: SPRING BREAK!
Go ahead and get buck wild; you deserve it. But just keep it safe. Every year, students return to Saluki Land from exotic locales, dripping in tans and stories of week-long, booze-fueled escapades. But occasionally, students who leave to party do not make it back.
The Daily Egyptian values the life of everyone on this campus. That is why we do not want to come home from our own revelries and have to write articles about accidents or deaths suffered by our fellow students.
No amount of fun is worth risking your life. Keep an eye out for your friends, and don‚t fall into the temptation to leave your own moral standards at home. In other words, while you‚re throwing „caution into the wind,‰ try to keep your condoms from flying off with it.
Also, as you venture out to the far corners of beachdom, you are still representing this University. Yes, we know, the whole point of spring break is to forget about classes all together. But here‚s a friendly word of warning: while you might leave your maroons in the dorm room for the week, your Saluki status cannot be washed off ˜ even by Panama Beach waves.
The Student Conduct Code dictates that the University can discipline students who are charged with misconduct outside campus limits. What seems like a once-in-a-lifetime stunt in Cancun could end with a suspension from SIU.
The Undergraduate Student Government is currently challenging the section of the code stating that Southern „can exercise jurisdiction over reckless behavior that may cause harm to the University community or substantially interferes with the University‚s educational mission.‰
But as you embark today on spring break, this broad edict still stands. The code is especially menacing for those „dawgs‰ who are staying here, so remember that the area really does have more to offer than dollar night. Check out the article in today‚s DE about local attractions and excursions that you might have missed during wintry days in class.
The Daily Egyptian staffers know it is not easy to strike a balance between responsibility and raunchy fun, but we also know it is possible. Just come back in one piece so we can hear all those great stories.
