SIU's Apology to Joan Friedenberg
EMail This Page - Print

[Editor‚s note: At the request of University officials, we are publishing this statement of apology by the University, which is part of its settlement with linguistics professor Joan Friedenberg.]

Statement of SIU

The University greatly appreciates the many contributions that Dr. Friedenberg has made to SIUC during her 12 years of service.

As a tireless scholar and advocate, she has championed the cause of bilingual education in the region.

She has also directed the Center for English as a Second Language. Despite her highly publicized differences with the administration, she has remained a productive scholar, fine teacher and contributing servant. We respect her opinions and we appreciate her efforts.

She will be missed upon her retirement.

There have been interpersonal conflicts in the Linguistics Department for many years, including conflicts that predated Dr. Friedenberg's employment at SIUC. We are sorry that the University's efforts to resolve some conflicts may have served to exacerbate them, and we regret any distress that our efforts may have caused anyone.
