Members of the Provost's ad hoc committee for gay, lesbian, bisexual and
transgender issues were chosen Friday, but the names have not been
released.
Provost John Dunn said in a meeting with Shryock Auditorium Director Bob
Cerchio and Triangle Coalition co-director Paulette Curkin,
approximately 15 people were selected to serve on the committee, but are
awaiting confirmation from them before releasing their names.
Dunn said he hopes the committee will meet within the first two weeks of
November, and there are three areas in which the committee will focus
its discussions, academics, campus climate and human resources.
Curkin said the members come from all areas of campus and races,
including students, faculty, gay, straight, whites, blacks and
internationals.
"This committee is very representative," said Curkin, who has worked
with Dunn for almost two months creating the committee.
"I've been jumping up and down for years saying, 'There are issues on
this campus. There are issues on this campus,' but that was my
perception," Curkin said. "I think it is very important for us to take a
hard look and make an educated observation, and that is best
accomplished when it is a group of people."
Chancellor Walter Wendler told the DAILY EGYPTIAN editorial board that
he would create a task force to explore gay, lesbian, bisexual and
transgender issues, following his July comments relating homosexuality
to "sinful behavior."
