Director of Financial Aid Daniel Mann will be leaving SIUC this month to accept a new position at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Mann, who has worked for SIUC for 24 years, will begin his new job as the University's director of financial aid Nov. 1.

Mann declined to speak with the Daily Egyptian, but Thom Woolf, associate director of Media and Communication Resources, said Mann would be missed.

"His operation has a national reputation," Woolf said. "They are truly good at what they do."

Larry Dietz, vice chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, said he has contacted the financial aid department staff letting them know an interim position is available and the deadline application is Wednesday. Dietz said shortly after that, he would begin interviews and then make a decision.

Earlier this semester after the Daily Egyptian inquired about work-study funds being used at private businesses in the Student Center, Mann personally led an investigation into the allocation of federal money for students working at McDonald's and Chart wells. The policy was reversed at the demand of concerned faculty.

Dietz said after an interim director is in place, he will conduct a nation-wide search to replace Mann.

The news that Mann was leaving was not a shock to Dietz. He said he was aware that Mann had applied and was a reference for him.

Dietz said Mann is a terrific professional and has the admiration of his staff. He also said he will look for someone who will maintain the office's national reputation.

"That office has had a strong leadership component for many years," Dietz said. "We're wanting to continue the strong national reputation that the office has had."

Dietz said Mann will now have the opportunity to impact more students. He said he is both happy for Mann's success and sad for his departure.

"Dan had the desire to head the largest financial aid office in the state and that's where it exist," Dietz said. "He deserves that challenge."

William Riley, associate vice chancellor and dean of students at the University of Illinois, said the process to hire a new director started last spring after Arlo Austin, the current director, decided to retire.

Riley said the choice was narrowed down to four candidates and a decision to hire Mann was made approximately the second week of September.

He said some of the qualities that helped Mann secure the position were his experience in supervising and administrating a financial aid program and his knowledge of the state of Illinois.

Mann received both his bachelors and masters degree from SIUC and began his work in the financial aid department as a graduate assistant in 1980. He became associate director in 1985 and took over as director in July of 2000.

Woolf said Mann is a person who gets the job done well and does not go out seeking attention.

"He's pretty much a behind the scenes kind of guy," Woolf said. "He doesn't go looking for the spotlight."
