Homecoming sees decrease in arrests

There were fewer total arrests at this year's homecoming tailgate than last year and University police are calling the event's new location a success.

Five people were arrested for disorderly conduct, seven people were arrested for underage possession of alcohol and one person was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. All were released on personal recognizance bonds.

Last year there were 19 arrests, all for underage possession of alcohol.

The DUI arrest came after an accident on Saluki Drive by the tailgate lot. No one was injured. The driver was also charged with improper backing and posted $300 cash bond.

Sgt. Harold Tucker, who was on duty during the tailgate, said the atmosphere at this year's tailgate was calmer than last year.

"Overall, our students have done very well," Tucker said. "Everything worked out well."

Tucker said the new location doesn't present any special problems or challenges for law enforcement.

"There is a lot more space there, which is conducive to a calmer atmosphere," Tucker said.

"There was a lot more student participation this year, a lot of people in from out of town.

There was a lot of school spirit. Unfortunately, we had a few incidents that sort of marred the event."

The five disorderly conduct arrests stemmed from a fight that broke out near the tailgate lot.

At the Sept. 18 tailgate during the game against William Penn, University police arrested seven people for underage possession of alcohol and three people for criminal damage to property.

SIUC Director of Public Safety Todd Sigler said the new location is a safer distance from high-speed traffic on U.S. Highway 51 than the old location.

Scott Pike, superintendent of building maintenance for the Physical Plant, said he expected cleanup costs to rise over last year, but couldn't say yet whether that actually happened.

Pike said he made sure extra receptacles were put out between the tailgate lot and McAndrew Stadium because he was concerned about students leaving trash behind as they moved toward the game.
