SIU student attacked Friday

Four men reportedly attacked and robbed an SIUC student early Friday morning on South State Street.

The 19-year-old victim told University police four men approached him as he was walking east of the Student Recreation Center at approximately 2:20 a.m. and asked how much money he had.

After handing over his money and an earring, he said the men attacked him from behind, punching him and kicking him in the head.

The victim told University police that prior to the attack the four suspects drove past him in an older-model maroon four-door car with dark-tinted windows, possibly an Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera. The victim said the car was parked in Lot 45, south of the Student Recreation Center before approaching him.

Todd Sigler, director of SIUC's department of public safety, said he believes the victim was on his way home after visiting a friend.

The victim described three of the suspects as black males, each wearing blue jeans. One suspect was described as being 5 feet 11 inches tall and 150 pounds, wearing a white T-shirt. Another was 6 feet tall and 160 pounds wearing a do-rag and the third suspect was described as being 5 feet 8 inches tall and 140 pounds with braided hair.

According to University police, the victim was unable to provide descriptions for the fourth attacker or a fifth person that he believes remained in the car.

The victim was treated at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and released. Sigler said the victim's injuries were not serious.

Anyone with information about the incident should call the SIUC Department of Public Safety at 618-453-2381 or the Crime Stopper Line at 618-549-COPS.
