The Carbondale Police Department is asking for the public's assistance
in finding a man who used an ATM card that was left in the Union
Planters Bank ATM machine last week.
Police said the ATM card was left at the machine located at 601 E. Main
St. around 7 p.m. Dec. 2 by an unnamed victim. Surveillance cameras at
the ATM machine captured pictures of the suspect using the card about 10
minutes after it was left.
Police said the suspect is a white male that, according to the
surveillance photographs, appears to be in his 20s with dark hair.
Lt. John Sytsma said the use of lost or stolen ATM cards is not uncommon
in the area. In fact, an armed robbery occurred Jan. 23 at the Union
Planters Bank ATM located at 500 W. Main St. while the victim was using
the machine.
The Union Planters website recommends ATM users to spend as little time
as possible at the machines to ensure safety. It also warns users to be
cautious and suspicious of anyone standing nearby or watching closely.
Becoming familiar with the ATM machine and the area can also prevent
leaving ATM cards behind.
Sytsma said he is hoping someone will recognize the man in the photo and
notify police at 457-3200 or call the anonymous Crime Stoppers Line at
549-COPS. Anyone providing information leading to an arrest in this case
is eligible for a reward up to $1,000.
