Second sexual assault this fall reported

An 18-year-old female student reported to University Police that she had been a victim of sexual assault Saturday evening in Southern Hills by an acquaintance, who, police said, is also an SIUC student.

This incident is the second criminal sexual assault that has been reported this semester. The other incident occurred in September in Schneider Hall and also involved an acquaintance. In that case, the suspect was arrested and charged with criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 Felony, but the suspect was not prosecuted.

University Police Director Todd Sigler said a suspect has been identified in the Dec. 4 incident but has not been taken into custody because the investigation is in progress. Once the investigation is complete, Sigler said the case would be referred to the State's Attorney's Office.

Sigler said he could not comment on the nature of the victim and suspect's relationship, but did say that the incident did not involve the use of alcohol or drugs.

Last year, three sexual assaults were reported to the University Police. In 2002, eight such cases were reported and Sigler said since the mid-1970s, there have never been more than nine or less than one sexual assault reported.

However, not all cases are reported, Sigler said. He also said more information and support could be available from the Women's Center, 408 W. Freeman, and the Women's Services program located on campus.

"It's very important to communicate and to be very clear about the expectations," Sigler said.

To report a sexual assault, call SIUC Police at 453-2382. For more information or support, call on-campus Women's Services at 453-3655 or off-campus Women's Center at 529-2324.
