Wendler turned down by Texas A&M

Chancellor Walter Wendler was sought out and interviewed for the position of president of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, but the system's Board of Regents voted unanimously for another candidate Wednesday.

Flavius Killebrew, provost and vice president for academic affairs at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, succeeded Robert Furgason during the board's meeting as the president of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi campus.

"Dr. Killebrew's qualifications and experience were the best fit for A&M-Corpus Christi at this time," A&M spokeswoman Ann Kellett said.

Wendler joined five finalists for the position almost a month ago after the search committee sought him out and asked him to apply. Since then, Wendler has traveled to Corpus Christi for interviews several times, including Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

Wendler could not be reached for comment Wednesday, but during a holiday gathering last Thursday, he told a Daily Egyptian reporter that he is proud of his accomplishments at SIUC, including "Southern at 150."

"I have not applied anywhere else, yet," Wendler said. "I couldn't be happier here."

SIU Board of Trustees Chairman Glenn Poshard said he was surprised when he heard Wendler was not offered the job, especially because he traveled to Texas three times.

"I felt he was going to get the job," Poshard said. "I would assume the Chancellor is still looking for another job."

Marvin Zeman, president of the Faculty Association, said he believes when Wendler looks at other universities, it only holds the University back from progressing.

"The fact that he applied raises questions of his commitment to SIUC," Zeman said.

SIU Acting President Duane Stucky said even though Wendler applied in Texas, he does not think Wendler's actions will affect his ability to be SIUC's chancellor.

"It is common for administrators to be candidates for positions at other institutions. I hope things will work out the best for him," Stucky said. "We will welcome him back and I hope everything works out well for him in the future."

While word spread quickly around the SIUC campus that Wendler had not been offered the job, some faculty breathed a sigh of relief.

"Personally, I'm a little relieved that there will continue to be stability on campus for the foreseeable future," said Faculty Senate President James Duggan.

Terry Clark, chairman of the marketing department, said SIUC should be proud that other universities are looking at its chancellor.

"It's flattering to us if someone wants to look at our chancellor," Clark said. "One of the ways you prove your worth is by having other schools looking at you. It's a feather in our cap that they want to look at one of our people."
