Deals to be found at police auction

As shoppers stretch their budgets in search of the perfect gift this
holiday season, the Carbondale Police Department is offering a creative
way to shop and save.
The bi-annual police auction of unclaimed property will take place at 9
a.m. Saturday at the former Lincoln Junior High building, 501 S.
Washington St. The auction has been held for more than 20 years, and
all profits go into the city's general fund.
Among the items up for sale are various bicycles and electronic
equipment recovered by the city and SIUC Police Department. Most of the
property is lost or stolen items that were never picked up by the owner,
but one person's loss is another's gain.
Sgt. Don Priddy said the auction could be a good opportunity to do a
little Christmas shopping, especially if someone is in the market for a
bike - one of the more abundant items up for bid.
"It seems to be pretty popular," Priddy said. "Most everything gets
sold. Towards the end, you can get some stuff for next to nothing, and
there is usually some pretty decent stuff. It's not all junk."
In previous years, most bikes were sold for less than $10, and TVs were
auctioned off for about $20.
All property is sold as-is, and buyers may have to take a few risks for
some good deals, but items can be inspected an hour before the auction
begins. All items must be paid for in cash and be removed at the end of
the auction. For more information, contact the Property Control Office
at 457-3200 ext. 451.
