University Housing contract procedures now located online

University Housing contract procedures are going virtual.

Beginning Monday, SIUC students may go online to complete a housing contract. The new procedure will allow current students to pick the exact room, building and location of their residence.

The traditional procedure required students to meet physically with housing representatives on one of three days, wait in lines, pick three choices of living arrangements, fill out scores of paperwork and wait until June or July to receive their room and roommate assignments.

Crystal Bouhl, coordinator of University Housing's Marketing & Public Information Office, said besides the convenience of the system, the new application process would give students the opportunity to personalize their living arrangements. After completing the contract, students have the option to switch their original first room pick to another.

"If a current student ends up having an attachment to their room, they can log on early and retain the same room for the next year," Bouhl said.

Admittance to SIUC and a credit card are necessary to fill out the online contract. If students are without Internet access or a credit card, they should contact the University Housing Contracts Office to obtain a paper contract. Housing representatives will be available to walk students through the entire online application process if needed.

New students have been able to sign up using the Internet since early October but will get the chance to pick their rooms beginning March 14.

Bouhl said students should try and sign up as early as possible to secure their first choice. Students can also sign up for floors specializing in their majors. If a student wants a room that is already taken, Bouhl advises them to keep checking to see if it becomes available.

"This generation is especially used to being able to do things fast and efficiently," Bouhl said. "It's important for them to be able to finish the process as quickly as possible."

Bouhl also said her only concern about the process might be losing the spontaneity of getting used to new people in the dorms, but there are good things to be gained from it.

"I don't see us ever going back to the old way," she said.

For spring 2005 semester housing contracts, the traditional method will be used. Online contracts will not be available for family housing.

For more information or to fill out a housing contract for the fall 2005 semester, current students should visit www.housing.siu.edu beginning Monday or call the Contract Office at 618/453-2301.
