The Faculty Senate approved four candidates for positions on the new task force for budget planning on Tuesday's meeting.
SIUC Chancellor Walter Wendler will review the candidates and plans to have the new task force meeting in January.
Out of the four candidates, Wendler will chose two representatives. The task force will review budget plans deans and department heads recently submitted to Wendler that have suggested plans for up to 5 percent in spending reductions for the current fiscal year and another 5 percent during the next four years.
Other members of the task force will come from the Graduate Council, Faculty Association, the Deans' Council, the Administrative-Professional Staff Council, the Civil Service Council, the Undergraduate Student Government, and the Graduate and Professional Student Council.
Wendler has said that the planning is necessary because of state budget constraints, which may negatively affect higher education funding in the near future. If the state doesn't ask for 5 percent in cuts, Wendler said the budget planning will still be a valuable way to access SIUC's strengths and weaknesses.
The four candidates from the Faculty Senate are: Allan Karnes, of the College of Business and Administration; John Washburn, a senator in the College of Education and Human Services; Jim Allen, a senator in the College of Liberal Arts; and David Worrells, a senator in the College of Applied Sciences and Arts.
Allen said it's important to look at how the potential budget changes may affect students and faculty.
"This is more than a lot of abstract numbers on a page," he said.
