Daily Egyptian wins nation's highest award for college media

Student journalists from the Daily Egyptian, SIUC's student newspaper, returned from the annual National College Media Convention Oct .30th - Nov. 2 with the coveted National Pacemaker award, the nation's highest honor for a college newspaper. Five daily college newspapers are annually awarded the Pacemaker for general excellence.

In September, the Daily Egyptian was notified it was a National Pacemaker finalist, along with nine other college daily newspapers, for the 2001-02 academic year. Winners were announced Nov. 2, 2002 at the national convention in Orlando, Fla. The five Pacemaker winners were the Daily Egyptian and college papers from Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern University and the University of Illinois.

The Associated Collegiate Press and the Newspaper Association of America Foundation have co-sponsored the Newspaper Pacemaker competition since 1971. ACP began the awards in 1927.

Judges select Pacemakers based on the following: coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, design, photography, art and graphics.

Newspaper Pacemakers are judged in three categories: four-year dailies, four-year non-dailies and two-year papers. Pacemakers are selected by the staff of a professional newspaper in the host city of the ACP/CMA National College Media Convention (2002 entries were judged by the Orlando Sentinel).

The Daily Egyptian was last selected as a national Pacemaker finalist in 1998. Other national awards sponsored by ACP and won by the Daily Egyptian at the convention included:

Also at the national convention, the College Media Advisers Inc. awarded the Daily Egyptian a Third Place honor in the category of Newspaper Diversity. CMA annually recognizes three college newspapers for their efforts in promoting diversity among the newspaper!=s staff, in addition to taking a leadership role in covering minority issues in the campus community.

The National College Media Convention is sponsored annually by the Associated Collegiate Press and College Media Advisers Inc. More than 2,500 college journalists from across the nation attended this year's four-day conference in Orlando, Fla.
