Daily Egyptian wins nation's highest award for college media

Student journalists from the Daily Egyptian, SIUC's student newspaper, returned from the annual National College Media Convention Oct .30th - Nov. 2 with the coveted National Pacemaker award, the nation's highest honor for a college newspaper. Five daily college newspapers are annually awarded the Pacemaker for general excellence.

In September, the Daily Egyptian was notified it was a National Pacemaker finalist, along with nine other college daily newspapers, for the 2001-02 academic year. Winners were announced Nov. 2, 2002 at the national convention in Orlando, Fla. The five Pacemaker winners were the Daily Egyptian and college papers from Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern University and the University of Illinois.

The Associated Collegiate Press and the Newspaper Association of America Foundation have co-sponsored the Newspaper Pacemaker competition since 1971. ACP began the awards in 1927.

Judges select Pacemakers based on the following: coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, design, photography, art and graphics.

Newspaper Pacemakers are judged in three categories: four-year dailies, four-year non-dailies and two-year papers. Pacemakers are selected by the staff of a professional newspaper in the host city of the ACP/CMA National College Media Convention (2002 entries were judged by the Orlando Sentinel).

The Daily Egyptian was last selected as a national Pacemaker finalist in 1998. Other national awards sponsored by ACP and won by the Daily Egyptian at the convention included:

  • Third place, Best in Show, Newspaper Special Section for 4-year dailies, for the special Sept. 11 anniversary issue published by the DE staff earlier this semester. Judging is by the executive staff of the ACP.
  • Second place, Reporter of the Year, Brett Nauman. Brett is a senior in journalism from Bloomington, and is currently completing an internship at the Peoria Journal-Star. Brett competed against college journalists from all four-year colleges and universities. Each college newspaper is eligible to submit portfolios from two reporters. Judging is by Knight-Ridder Tribune editors.
  • First place, Feature Story of the Year, Brett Nauman. Brett was competing against student journalists from both two-year and four-year colleges and universities. He entered a story commemorating the 20-year anniversary of the unsolved murder of SIUC student Susan Schumake. Judging was by the Los Angeles Times.
  • Second place, Photo Story of the Year, Alex Haglund. Alex is a junior in photography from Oak Park. Alex was competing against photographers from both two-year and four-year colleges and universities. He entered a photo spread on the Rainbow gathering last year in the Shawnee forest. Judging was by the National Press Photographers Association.
  • Third place, Photo Story of the Year, Derek Anderson. Derek is a junior in photojournalism from Galva. Derek entered a photo spread of his grandfather's daily routine of caring for his dying wife.

Also at the national convention, the College Media Advisers Inc. awarded the Daily Egyptian a Third Place honor in the category of Newspaper Diversity. CMA annually recognizes three college newspapers for their efforts in promoting diversity among the newspaper!=s staff, in addition to taking a leadership role in covering minority issues in the campus community.

The National College Media Convention is sponsored annually by the Associated Collegiate Press and College Media Advisers Inc. More than 2,500 college journalists from across the nation attended this year's four-day conference in Orlando, Fla.
