Sports flash

A week removed from being the first athlete in the Missouri Valley Conference to break the 5-minute mark in the mile run, SIU track and field standout Noa Beitler was named MVC track and field athlete of the week.

Beitler crossed the finish line in the 4 minutes and 59.93 seconds at the Smith Barney Invitational at Butler University in Indianapolis.

SIU vs. Creighton game nears sellout

The Southern Illinois Athletic Department announced that fewer than 70 tickets are left for public sale for the March 1 battle between the SIU men's basketball team and No. 13 Creighton at the SIU Arena.

Ticket prices for the upper bowl are $9 for adults and $6 for high school students and younger. For lower bowl seats, tickets are $15 and single seats are only available.

Men's track to compete in Illini Classic

The SIU men's track and field team will be competing in the Illini Classic in Champaign that takes place this Saturday.

The meet begins at 8 a.m. with the field events and continues with the running events beginning at noon.

In addition to SIU, other teams competing are Illinois, Wisconsin and Kansas.
